Sclerotherapy 101 with Heather Scull
When it comes to spider veins and small varicose veins, sclerotherapy is a tried-and-true treatment option. Now available at ÉLAN Aesthetics, we’ve asked our in-house sclerotherapy expert, Heather Scull, to answer frequently asked questions about this transformative procedure.
What is sclerotherapy?
HEATHER: Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating varicose veins and superficial telangiectasias (also known as spider veins) on the lower legs or ankles.
A sclerosing agent is injected into the vein to break down the vein wall. The solution works by damaging the cell lining inside of the blood vessel, causing blood platelets to attach to the lining of the vessel. Eventually, cellular debris and platelets cause the blood vessel to clot and over time the clotted vein will be replaced by tissue.
What areas can sclerotherapy treat?
HEATHER: Typical areas include the legs, ankles and abdomen. For the face, we typically use a laser instead.
What can I expect during a session?
HEATHER: The treatment area will be prepped, cleaned and injected with the solution. You may feel little pricks or stinging, but you should not feel any significant pain. Upon leaving, you may have areas that are slightly red resembling a mosquito bite. Bruising is also likely.
What is the downtime?
HEATHER: For optimal results, I recommend that clients wear compression stockings, socks or hose for about two weeks.
Exercise should be limited to light walking. For two weeks, avoid activities that increase blood flow in the lower extremities (running, swimming, lifting weights, squats, etc). Also avoid hot tubs!
How soon will I see results?
HEATHER: Results are typically seen after 1-3 treatments, depending on severity. You may see results in 4-6 weeks, though it often takes longer.
Will the treated veins come back or is it permanent?
HEATHER: Treated spider veins typically do not return. That said, if you are prone to spider veins, it’s almost inevitable to avoid new ones down the road unless you practice prevention methods (wearing compression socks and resting after being on your feet for long periods of time).
Will I need multiple treatments?
HEATHER: Most likely — I typically recommend 2-3 sessions spaced 6 weeks apart.
